Kickboxing is a group of martial arts and stand-up combat sports based on kicking and punching, historically developed from Karate, Muay Thai and Western boxing. Kickboxing is practiced for self-defence, general fitness, or as a contact sport. Kickboxing has roots in very traditional Japanese Martial Arts as well as Western Boxing.
How Many Calories Can You Burn in a Kickboxing Class?
This has to be one of the most popular questions people ask when they are thinking about taking up a kickboxing class. Kickboxing is an intensive sport and that means you can burn more calories doing this than you would by taking part in a variety of other less-intensive sports. But let’s get down to the nitty-gritty...
If you weigh 10 stone (140lb) and take a half-hour kickboxing class, you’re likely to burn around 321 calories. Not bad for half an hour’s work is it? If you are looking to lose some weight by taking up kickboxing, there’s good news there as well. The heavier you are the more calories you can burn. If you weigh 200lbs (a tad over 14 stone) you can burn 456 in half an hour. Those figures look even better if you take a class that lasts an hour. The 10-stone individual would lose around 642 calories in that time. In comparison, the 200lb person would lose around 912 calories!
We are affiliated with the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association (BMABA), our kickboxing syllabus is designed to allow you to progress from beginner up to black belt levels. Kickboxing is very energetic, with the vast majority of the lessons centered around punching and kicking techniques delivered to martial arts equipment and opponents. These techniques include the simple punching such as Jab, Cross, Hook and Uppercut, simple kicking techniques such as side kick, front kick and turning kick. Once past the beginner levels, foot work and movement is involved in the lessons and more (light) contact style fighting as well as Boxing styled sparring.
Our Kickboxing lessons are designed to get you fit as quick as possible! Suitable for beginners, our energetic and intense workouts keep you on your toes and gasping for breath. A mix of cardio, strength and balance training works all your muscles. We use these fitness and endurance classes to prepare you for stepping into the ring if that is what you wish to do! We help you increase your fitness and technique by complimenting our syllabus with pad work combinations using strike shields, focus pads and Thai pads, we practice both sparring and traditional techniques to enable to student to bring out maximum power and speed in their movements, without the risk of hurting each other.
Sparring is practiced under controlled conditions with full safety equipment. We also offer all students the opportunity to test and hone their skills in tournaments (both national and international), many of which are offered to our students throughout the year. Please note this is a contact sport, the classes regularly feature sparring so if this isn't for you and you are looking for pad work only, please look into our Boxercise class.
